UK Implements New Plug-in Solar Regulations Amidst Growing Capacity

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM / RankWire.AI / – UK solar power capacity reached 22.8 gigawatts at the close of June 2026, according to official data. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero documented approximately 2.076 million installations nationwide. During June alone, households, commercial entities, and developers contributed 27,391 new systems, resulting in an additional 132 megawatts of capacity. These preliminary figures may be revised as further project data is incorporated into the national database. The total encompasses installations on domestic rooftops, commercial sites, and utility-scale solar farms.

UK solar market reaches 22.8 GW before new plug-in rules
New UK plug-in solar rules set an 800-watt limit for approved household systems.

June marked the second-highest month for installation volumes in the UK solar data series, with March 2026 holding the record at 28,782 systems added. Over the course of the year up to June, solar capacity grew by 2.2 gigawatts, reflecting a 10.9% increase. The market also saw about 269,000 systems installed throughout 2025, setting a new annual record. The majority of these installations involved smaller rooftop arrays, while larger projects contributed significantly to the increase in total generating capacity.

Focus now shifts to the new plug-in solar rules that are scheduled to take effect on August 27, 2026. These regulations permit approved microgenerators to connect via a standard UK plug and household socket, with qualifying products limited to delivering no more than 800 watts of alternating current output. Such devices must comply with Interim Product Specification version 2 and operate safely within the local distribution network. Notably, the rules exclude plug-in batteries and any devices designed to store electricity imported from household circuits.

Safety regulations govern the use of plug-in connections

This legal update modifies the Plugs and Sockets Safety Regulations 1994 along with the Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002. The UK Parliament received the statutory instrument on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. The amendment establishes a specific exception to the restrictions on plugs used for generating equipment, requiring a notified body to verify that each plug conforms to the relevant BS 1363 standards. Product approval applies throughout the UK, whereas the safety regulation amendment specifically covers England, Wales, and Scotland.

The interim specification details requirements concerning electrical design, mounting mechanisms, fire safety, labelling, and consumer instructions. A technical study evaluated representative plug-in solar products on domestic wiring within controlled settings, recording stable operation with no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or thermal issues. The research also identified differences in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality, with these findings shaping the UK-specific safety standards necessary for market entry.

Retailers prepare for the arrival of approved plug-in solar products

Following a government consultation that gathered 466 responses from businesses, regulators, experts, and the public, over 85% supported the interim specifications, with most endorsing the plug-in amendment. Participants ranged from manufacturers, installers, network operators, and electricians to academics and consumer groups, some of whom highlighted concerns regarding older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Several also emphasized the importance of distinguishing plug-in solar panels from plug-in battery systems.

Major retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl have begun preparations for the new category of products. This connection format is designed to serve households unable to utilize traditional rooftop systems, including some renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces. Devices using the new plug-in method will not be legally operable before August 27. Starting from that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect through standard household sockets, and the capacity total from June does not account for systems adopting the new plug-in framework.
