VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of developing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest domestically created spacecraft so far. This satellite aims to identify and scrutinize interference that impacts global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. The Austrian government intends to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project primarily targets the detection of jamming and spoofing signals from space while collecting data on when and where navigation signals are disrupted.

Austria readies BEACONSAT military satellite for 2027 launch
Austria’s BEACONSAT project centers on detecting GNSS interference from orbit.

Designed as a technology demonstrator, BEACONSAT will be part of a multi-year research and development initiative. Jamming refers to radio interference that either blocks or diminishes satellite navigation signals, whereas spoofing involves transmitting false navigation data that can mislead receivers into calculating incorrect positions. Satellite navigation plays a crucial role in supporting aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and various other systems. The Austrian Defence Ministry anticipates that the insights gained from this mission will enhance operational processes and deepen its understanding of GNSS interference issues.

Leading the BEACONSAT project is GATE Space, a space technology firm based in Schwechat, which holds overall responsibility for the mission. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to perform orbital maneuvers. For BEACONSAT, the company supplies the propulsion units, satellite structure, and thermal management systems. To date, GATE Space has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport, simulating atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Core of the satellite mission built on Austrian technology

Several European companies contribute vital components to Austria’s first military satellite; Graz-based IGASPIN provides high-precision GNSS interference detection and analysis technology, while Denmark’s Space Inventor supplies additional satellite hardware, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercially available space hardware with systems developed specifically for the BEACONSAT demonstration. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice, providing approximately 750,000 euros in funding.

The European Space Agency has also extended its support by co-financing the mission through its ESA Marketplace program, which facilitates testing of commercial space technologies for security-related applications. Austrian officials characterize BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite program. The project aims to gather data on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from space, with these findings being integrated into the Defence Ministry’s processes as Austria enhances its military space capabilities.

Integration of BEACONSAT into Austria’s expanding space initiative

The Austrian Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated organizational unit focused on space services, which encompasses satellite communications, satellite navigation, and satellite reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this evolving framework, with a specific emphasis on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions a shift from solely utilizing space services to actively operating space infrastructure and systems, a plan adopted in 2023 with implementation projected through 2035 and beyond.

The scheduled launch of BEACONSAT in February 2027 remains firm, with a Falcon 9 designated to carry the satellite into orbit. Once deployed, the spacecraft will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research efforts. The initiative involves collaboration among Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and specialized European technology firms. BEACONSAT will represent Austria’s inaugural military satellite mission, while also testing domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation services.
