Europe Advances Toward a Historic Year in Wind Power Installations

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course to achieve a record-breaking year in wind energy capacity additions after installing 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new wind power in the first half of 2026, reflecting a 30% rise compared to the same period in the previous year. Data updated and published by WindEurope indicate that the turbines commissioned during this period generate enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million European households and help displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. The continent’s heightened activity during the summer months has significantly accelerated the transition to cleaner energy sources, positioning Europe for its most active wind deployment year to date.

Europe on track for record year in wind power installations
Commercial offshore wind turbines generate clean electricity across open ocean waters outdoors.

Germany played a leading role in regional expansion during the first half of 2026, adding 3.4 GW, which accounts for approximately 40% of all newly installed wind capacity across Europe. Over 500 individual turbines were brought online within Germany, comprising 423 onshore and 84 offshore units. Other nations in Europe, such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France, also achieved significant increases in capacity. Notably, despite ongoing conflict, Ukraine managed to add more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity, while Belgium contributed an additional 60 MW to its national grid.

Forecasts outlined in WindEurope’s Autumn Report project that the total European wind capacity added will reach 24 GW by the end of 2026, setting a new record for annual installations. Industry forecasts describe this growth phase as a crucial step toward reaching a broader goal of 30 GW of annual additions in the 2030s. Investment in new wind farms across Europe reached 9 billion euros during the first half of the year, with more than 17 GW awarded through competitive auctions by national governments, and an additional 26 GW scheduled to go to tender before the year closes.

Germany Sets the Pace with Over Three Gigawatts of Capacity Installed

Despite these impressive figures, industry representatives warn that ongoing structural bottlenecks continue to threaten long-term growth, as bureaucratic hurdles remain a significant operational risk. While Germany expedited its deployment by granting permits for over 9 GW of new onshore wind capacity during the first half of 2026, permit approval volumes decreased in several key markets, including Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Although Europe is on track for its record year in wind power installations, industry leaders emphasize that delays in grid connection approvals could hinder the timely delivery of future projects.

In a public statement accompanying the release of the report, WindEurope Chief Executive Officer Tinne Van der Straeten expressed optimism that 2026 could set an all-time record for wind installations, but cautioned that maintaining this momentum depends heavily on upcoming government decisions concerning permitting procedures, auction designs, grid infrastructure, and industrial electrification efforts. Van der Straeten stressed that these factors will determine whether the sector can sustain its current growth rate in the coming months.

Onshore Wind Turbines Make Up the Majority of New Capacity Additions

To support ongoing expansion, the trade association outlined five essential policy priorities for European Union authorities and member states, emphasizing the importance of simplifying permitting processes and expanding regional transmission infrastructure. The group also advocates for utilizing revenues from the Emissions Trading System to fund industrial electrification projects and calls for a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, total wind capacity in Europe is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, supplying approximately 27% of the total electricity demand of the EU.

Upcoming ministerial meetings in the coming months are expected to review these policy suggestions, with federal ministries and European energy regulators paying close attention to data on national turbine installations and auction results, which will be used to monitor compliance with EU decarbonization targets and ensure continued progress toward the continent’s renewable energy goals.
