Belgian Study Demonstrates Link Between Obesity and 8.2% of Deaths in 2022

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – In a significant advancement in public health research, Belgian research institute Sciensano reported that a high body mass index was associated with 9,509 fatalities in 2022. This figure represents 8.2 percent of all deaths recorded in Belgium during that year, resulting in an average of more than one death per hour linked to weight-related health issues. By analyzing population-wide BMI-related mortality for the first time, researchers found that health conditions connected to obesity caused over 150,000 years of life to be lost cumulatively.

Belgium health data shows obesity linked to 8.2% of deaths
European medical organizations track metabolic risk factors to develop health policy guidance.

The extensive epidemiological study explored the underlying causes of death to understand how an increased body mass index influences chronic health conditions. The results highlighted cardiovascular problems as the leading cause of death, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, accounting for 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths, with additional significant numbers from chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers.

Data broken down by demographics reveal that the risk of death associated with excess weight rises considerably with age, with individuals aged 65 and above experiencing the highest incidence of weight-related health complications. The gender-specific analysis indicates that men generally have higher mortality rates than women across most age groups, although among those aged 85 and older, women record higher total death numbers, a pattern attributed to women’s longer average life expectancy, according to epidemiologists.

Cardiovascular Issues Are the Main Cause of Death Linked to Excess Weight

Regional analysis across Belgium revealed marked disparities in mortality linked to overweight and obesity, with the southern region of Wallonia showing the highest rates at 95.21 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The Brussels-Capita Region followed with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders had the lowest impact, recording 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Public health experts note that these regional differences likely reflect variations in socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and healthcare accessibility across the Belgian federation.

The release of these findings coincides with ongoing policy evaluations overseen by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health initiatives. Authorities are utilizing this data to gauge the long-term economic impact on the healthcare system caused by chronic non-communicable diseases. The methodology involved calculating the population attributable fraction for each condition, establishing baseline estimates to inform future preventative health strategies.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Responsible for Over Sixteen Hundred Deaths

On a broader European scale, organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to develop coordinated regional policies. The Belgian report aligns with wider EU health objectives aimed at decreasing early mortality related to non-communicable illnesses. International health bodies, including the World Health Organization, continue to advocate for integrated strategies targeting metabolic risks, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention.

These findings provide a solid empirical basis for health authorities aiming to reduce high body mass index prevalence across Western Europe. Quantifying both the total number of deaths and the years of life lost enables public health officials to prioritize screening, intervention efforts, and lifestyle modification programs. As regional governments analyze this data, federal health policies are expected to focus more on early prevention to curb the nationwide burden of chronic diseases.
