The Western Mediterranean corridor, serving mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, was the only significant route to see an increase, with crossings rising by 34 percent compared to the previous year. The decline in crossings overall is partly due to intensified maritime patrols in Morocco, which have pushed human traffickers eastward, leading to shifts in departure points toward the Algerian coastline.

The maritime route from West Africa to the Canary Islands experienced the steepest decline among all monitored pathways, with detections decreasing by 58 percent to approximately 5,100 arrivals. Authorities attribute this drop to joint maritime patrols conducted by Mauritanian and Senegalese security forces in collaboration with European agencies. On the Eastern Mediterranean route, total detections fell by 25 percent to over 24,200 arrivals, with most maritime activity concentrated along the corridor connecting Libya to the Greek island of Crete.
Frontex’s Executive Director Hans Leijtens noted that while border traffic usually peaks during summer months, August saw only 10,700 detections across all EU borders. This summer marked the beginning of the European Union Pact on Migration and Asylum, which established standardized screening procedures, mandatory biometric data collection, and uniform document verification protocols across external borders of member states.

Traffic crossing the English Channel toward the United Kingdom experienced a 43 percent reduction in combined exit attempts, totaling approximately 26,600 detections. Officials warn that despite the overall decline, human trafficking networks still operate heavily overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels across open maritime channels. Humanitarian organizations emphasize that these maritime crossings remain perilous, with records showing significant loss of life along Mediterranean routes throughout the year.
